In the past two decades, horrific mass shootings have been thrust into public consciousness. Mitigating the effects of these events is the responsibility of those who serve in our communities’ public safety organizations. The public expects an effective and swift response to these threats. Research has shown, however, that many of the mass attacks, or active attack events, are over before law enforcement responders arrive on the scene.

Over the past twenty years, active attack response training has focused on training law enforcement to arrive quickly on scene and engage violent suspects. In recent years that focus has shifted to the fire and EMS community with the introduction of different casualty evacuation models. This online course expands the focus to include another vital part of the community response team: telecommunicators.

This course is designed to address the fundamental skills necessary to recognize and safely perform a risk-based response to incidents involving lithium-ion batteries, regardless of size. Lithium-ion batteries have become a critical part of our daily lives, and their growing use will increasingly impact emergency responders including firefighters, law enforcement personnel, emergency medical technicians, local emergency planning committees, and other safety professionals.

An MCI Triage and Management training addresses sorting of mass casualties, assessment of individual casualties, performance of on-scene lifesaving interventions, treatment, stabilization, and evacuation for further treatment in a healthcare facility. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides a vital role in triaging, stabilizing, and transporting victims. Law enforcement, fire department, rescue, and the general public as well as the whole community plays a vital role in saving lives and doing the most good for the most amount of people.
